Award season is now undergo after the 2016 Golden Globe Awards last night. After three years with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the show, former host Ricky Gervais was back.
The 73rd anniversary of the ceremony seen Leonardo DiCaprio win the award for Best Actor in Drama Motion Picture in The Revenant, Jennifer Lawrence take the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her role in Joy and Lady Gaga win the award for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel. But you can read about who won what anywhere else on the internet, let’s skip to the important part, the best dressed of the red carpet!
At last year’s Golden Globes, the best dressed included classic glamour – Jessica Chastain’s shiny Versace and Amal Clooney’s white opera gloves being one of many examples. Also unexpected flashes of skin from Kate Hudson’s cutouts and Lorde’s midriff baring, and some moves considered bold even for this anything-goes modern era with both Emma Stone and Lorde rocking up in pants.
A personal ‘best dressed’ for me was Lady Gaga, in a simple chic, jet-black Atelier Versace structured gown. It’s almost as though gone are the days of her bold, to say the least, flamboyant and generally peculiar meat outfits and outrageous headwear. In stead the platinum blonde is making it onto best dressed lists quite frequently since she exchanged her ‘Art-Pop’ image for a more sophisticated and feminine version of herself.
It goes without saying, Jennifer Lopez could turn up to an award ceremony wearing tinsel and trainers and she would probably still look fantastic. I can’t think of a ceremony she has attended in the past 3 years which hasn’t landed her a space on every Best Dressed list across the internet, so it was no surprise to see she once again killed it last night in a chartreuse Giambattista Valli gown with a thigh-slit as high as most of the night’s necklines were low.
Jennifer Lawrence is another star which we all have high expectations from when it comes to her choice of attire. Dressed in a perfectly executed red column dress by Christian Dior, featuring a deep waist cut-out detail, cropped bodice and key-hole back cutout, accessorised with a multi-strand diamond collar and platinum chignon, she glided onto my best dressed of the night.
A duo which caught the eyes of most was the Downton Abbey darlings, Lily James and Joanne Froggatt. Joanne was preened to perfection in a plunging strapless gown as co-star Lily James was ethereal in white chiffon number. Lily’s Marchesa gown was made for herself in the film Cinderella, whilst Joanne’s plunging strapless gown, which featured a heart-shaped bodice and a cinched waist, was teamed with a pair of striking Chopard pink diamond earrings, supposedly worth approx $1million (approx £690000!).
Now for those who know me, know I am a sucker for an Elie Saab or Zuhair Murad gown, and they will always make it into my favourites at any event, as it would be impossible to go wrong with one. For this reason, Jenna Dewan Tatum has to be one of my highlights of the entire night. Paired with a simple hair-back look and minimalistic makeup look, her Zuhair Murad gown done all the talking at the red carpet last night.
White, gold and sequinned looks lit up the red carpet last night, with a favourite of mine being Eva Green who glittered in gold in an Elie Saab gown, finished with a bold red lip. Makeup and hair wise, okay it could have been improved, but like I previously said, when in an Elie Saab gown, it speaks for itself.
And finally, if Rosie Huntington-Whitely didn’t wow everyone enough in her Atelier Versace, gold floor-length gown, it’s safe to say that one particular piece of jewellery would have attracted attention – the diamond encrusted band worn on her ring finger. The former Victoria’s Secret model sparked speculation that her long-time partner had popped the question after she showed off an incredible diamond ring on the red carpet at the Golden Globes last night, later a representative for the couple confirmed the happy news to HELLO! Online!
So now the Golden Globes is over, but that was just the starting point for the Awards Season of 2016. With the Critic’s Choice Awards this Friday, The SAG Awards towards the end of the month, but more importantly, The Grammy’s taking place Sunday 8th Feb, there are more gowns to judge and more beauty tips to steal, so keep a look out!
Happy Monday everyone, and for those of you back to reality in university, I feel your pain!
